A Rebellion in Time Pieces

Nov 29 2011 Published by under Nooka

Make no mistake about it, this is not your great-grandfather’s pocket watch. Or your grandfather’s Timex. Or your father’s Swatch. The next legend of time pieces is marking a new trend in design, class and durability.

Built with comfort and style in mind, these watches are breaking out of the box, creating a new statement for an entire generation. With the whole world questioning tradition, authority and embracing new power for integrity and expression, Nooka watches are already being spotted on celebrities around the world.

That\’s Rocawear: Panama

The Nooka Zub Zot 20 is a rebellion against classic timepieces. No ticking hands, no numbered dials. Instead, an eclectic design of dots and bars to show the hour and minutes. Durable and strong, made with polyurethane rubber to offer a comfortable wear it provides a brilliance that is hard not to notice.

Nooka’s collaboration with Nickelodean and Viacom Consumer Products has resulted in a playful twist on the retro-pop culture. The quintessential bar designs on the face of the watch tells the time, while the retro headphones embellish the band, giving the Nooka MTV Zub Zenh Headphones 38 it’s own sense of character and personality.

Nooka Zub Zayu Blue Watch offers a truly unique design along with the largest watch face available. The time capsule display and comfort fit band finish off the perfect timepiece for those with a busy lifestyle. It’s easily switched from left wrist to right, without losing any functionality, a definite innovation in watch design.

Nooka operates under the belief that anything is possible. And it is. We see that in the beckoning style that makes each and every watch a piece of artwork. An expression of youth, a symbol of solidarity and a showcase of independence. Stepping away from tradition and leaping forward into a future of endless possibilities.

Smart. Sophisticated. Young. Free. Get your own Nooka legend right here.

Nooka BMX Team Showcase Their New Watches

May 24 2011 Published by under Nooka

One of the great things that makes a brand special is its dedication to the athletes that the brand sponsors. At Nooka, they have a small team of BMX riders that the brand clearly cares about, as they gave a detailed and personal biography of each of their riders. They consist of Mike Spinner—the rider who pulled off the 1080, 720 tailwhip, and the quad whip; Steve McCann— the Australian rider being the first to qualify for the final rounds in the park, vert, and dirt disciplines at one stop in Dew Tour’s history; Edwin De La Rosa—Also known as the “brakeless rider” who had ditched his brakes once he developed enough skills to ride through the urban terrain of NYC; last but not least Morgan Wade, being one of the most influential riders in the sport, with the perfect balance of the “core” and corporate image in BMX and an ESPN’s favorite. Nooka went the extra mile and made customized collaboration watches with each of their riders, and they are definitely of elegance.

May 11 2011 Published by under Nooka

There are some exciting news concerning Nooka in the UK airwave this week. First off, UK artist Jon Burgerman stopped by the Nooka Lab and dropped off an original illustration, a creature sporting a Nooka Watch, saying “I got time”. The Story of Nooka Watches

Apr 26 2011 Published by under Nooka

Ever wonder where the name “Nooka” came from? As it turns out, it is a short term for “New Yorker”, ‘Noo‘ = “nu”/“new”, ‘ka’, being the suffix of “Yorker”.

The brand was founded by Mathew Waldman in 2005 after Seiko had stopped manufacturing their sub-brand, that was similar to the current ZOO series. Waldman manufactured a limited quantity of 1000 ZOO and ZOT watches that sold out in eight months. Nooka’s first major client is MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York.

Nooka can be divided into 6 different series: they are the ZOO, ZOT, ZENH, ZUB, ZIRC, and ZAYU.

ZOO: The hours are displayed in a numeric number in large window, and the minutes by horizontal bars.

ZOT: The hours are displayed as dots, and minutes by horizontal bars.

ZENH: The hours and minutes are both displayed by either horizontal or vertical bars.

ZUB: the bands are made from bright colored polyurethane, and use the display faces of the ZOO, ZOT, AND ZEN.

ZIRC: The hours are displayed in a circular manner like a traditional clock, the dots representing hours and grow in mass as the time passes. The minutes are represented by a horizontal bar.

ZAYU: Taken from the Japanese word “sayu”, meaning left and right, it features an asymmetrical design The hours are displayed as dots, and minutes by horizontal bars. Also the first watch to have “sleepmode” to conserve battery when not in use.

Nooka wanted to find a more intuitive way of telling time, rather than the traditional way of two hands in a circular motion, the time is told through bars and dots. Making Nooka a design concept brand, also gaining huge popularity in Japan and Asia.

MOCA Opening Los Angeles, Nike Skate Park Installation

Apr 18 2011 Published by under Exhibitions, Grafitti, Nooka

The Art in the Streets exhibition at the Los Angeles MOCA had its opening night on April 15th. It was a massive display of the biggest and best names of graffiti, skate, punk and hip hop culture in recent history. The likes of Futura, Fab 5 Freddy, Haze, Twist, Banksy, and Mister Cartoon, including some of Hollywood’s guests Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, and Lance Armstrong were all part of this phenomenal installation.

The event also had an indoor skate park by Nike Skateboarding, created by artist Geoff McFetridge, California Skateparks, and Lance Mountain.

The park is a skate-able art installation that had a test run by Eric Koston of Girl Skateboards and others. It’s theme has a playful take on what it would be like if a whale happens to be in a geometrically-inspired skate park. The shows opened officially on April 17th and it is definitely worth a trip out, especially if you are a skater.

Interestingly, a recent article has been published earlier this month online discussing the likelihood of the decline of the needs and sales of watches. Good news for us watch wearers, experts believe that watches are not dying out despite the technological advancements in smartphones, PDAs and laptops, in fact it is doing the opposite. Eighteen to 30-year-olds own several watches, and are changing it with the seasons. So it is safe to say that it will be a long while until we see everyone on the streets wearing their iPod Nano Touch on their wrists.

Top 5 iPad 2 Clock Apps

Mar 06 2011 Published by under Nooka

ipad clock HD

ipad clock HD

With the new iPad 2 out this month we thought we would review some of the best time telling apps available. First off, the incredibly SEXY click.clock HD with music playback controls. (long name) is by far the best looking clock app. It is a legit designer clock that is said to guarantee to impress anyone that walks by it. It concentrates on the basic function and sticks to the design of the iPad, at the same time integrates into the iPod speaker system.

Second, the iFlipClock for iPad is a retro flip clock that allows you to fully customize your clock on your device. You can change individual sound for hours, minutes, and seconds as the number flips, and also assign individual colors to them. The background can be changed to any color and photo of your choice. A cool idea is to find a photo of an actual vintage clock and have it placed as the background, so it would look very convincing.

Third, there is the Wink Alarm Clock for iPad. It actually looks really neat with these ‘mesmerizing’, and minimalistic alarm clocks; for some reason, Apple didn’t include any clock apps on their iPads. The developers of Wink Alarm wanted to “capture the dynamism of time”, and make “passing hours and minutes more beautiful to look at, but just as easy to read.”

Fourth, which were tied between the Clock Pro HD, and the Emerald Chronometer.

Clock Pro HDWhich is the default app that should’ve came with the iPad. It includes an alarm clock, iPod music alarms, analog clock, chess clock, world clock, stop watch, nature times (shows sunrise, sunset, midday, high tide, and low tide, and could be handy for surfers!), sleep timer, egg timer(?), metronome, count down, and a few others.

Emerald ChronometerIt has some really high-end mechanical watch faces containing the most complex “complications” found in real watches. It is the Clock Pro HD juiced up and it contains highly accurate data from 4000 BCE to 28 CE… astrological positions, constellations, etc, etc. It comes with 15 watches in all, with 26 total faces. This thing is a beast.

Fifth , A Binary Clock. Simply put, this is THE watch they would use for Tron.

If carrying round an ipad to tell the time seem like a bit of a hassle then why not get yourself a a shiny Nooka minimal watch instead and remember all our watches come with a 30 day money back guarantee.
