“To me, Mick (Fanning) has been the form surfer of the event and I was never going to take him lightly,” Parkinson said. “I think we both had the same game plan of getting the first good one that came through and putting the momentum behind us.

We scrapped for that first wave and I got the nod. Eve though it was a mid-0, I knew I needed a lot more to hold him off so I just kept the pressure on from there.”

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2011 Results – Round 1

Apr 20 2011 Published by under Rip Curl, surfing

Due to yesterday’s low waves, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach was postponed to today the 20th. At 7:30am this morning, Round 1 had commenced to the 1.5 to 2 meters waves (four-to-six foot) at Bells Beach.

Mick Fanning

Australia’s Mick Fanning (2007, 2009) and American Kelly Slater (2008, 2010) have been dueling it out for the past four years, they have laid down impressive scores in round one.

Kelly Slater

Fanning scored a 15.60 from a possible 20 this morning, it looked set to be the day’s best score but Slater topped it at 16 points to win his round one heat.

Joel Parkinson

Later in the morning, Joel Parkinson had claimed the highest heat score of the day, 17.74 points to move automatically through to the third round along with Slater and Fanning.

As for the women’s division, Stephanie Gilmore from Australia had scored the highest with 16.30, with Sally Fitzgibbons also from Australia closely behind with 16.10, and Silvana Lima from Brazil with a 14.94. Back in 2009, Lima had upset Gilmore’s run. All the heat winners have the luxury of moving on to the next round, while the 2nd and 3rd place will face sudden death in round 2. Be sure to keep a close eye on the event, as this is the 50th anniversary so it will be very exciting.

The second stop on the 2011 ASP World Title tour is a very special one this year as it celebrates the 50th year it has been held at Bells Beach. The event Originally started in 1961 and was formerly called the Bells Beach Surf Classic, since its early inception it has become a very special event to win. This year’s event will gather together each of the world’s best ASP surfers, including such superstars as American surfing legend and reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, Kelly Slater. He’s won the tournament four times (in ’94, ’06, ’08 and ’10) and is looking to follow up his 2011 season opening win on the Gold Coast with the anniversary gong. “The Bells trophy is probably one of – if not the – most sought-after trophies in professional surfing,” says Slater. “Anyone who has ever gotten a Bell has talked proudly of it. It’s like winning a World Title trophy.”

Red Bull-backed Australian surfer Mick Fanning posted his first elite tour victory as a wild card at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in 2001. “Fifty years at Bells is huge,” says Fanning. “It has so much history and so many great surfers have won the Rip Curl Pro because it’s one of the hardest ones to win.” Reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion, Stephanie Gilmore boasts an impressive three Bells titles to her name (in ’07, ’08 and ’10) and is hoping to equal Kelly Slater’s record this year. “To have an event there for 50 years is good for surfing and good for the younger generation to be able to go there and compete and be able to experience the aura that’s been there since the very beginning,” says Gilmore. “That’s what makes the Rip Curl Pro really different from the other stops on the Tour.” To celebrate the event why not bag yourself the limited edition Rip Curl Mick Fanning Ultimate Midnight Watch. Remember all watches come with a 30 day money back guarantee and free delivery.
