Due to yesterday’s low waves, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach was postponed to today the 20th. At 7:30am this morning, Round 1 had commenced to the 1.5 to 2 meters waves (four-to-six foot) at Bells Beach.
Australia’s Mick Fanning (2007, 2009) and American Kelly Slater (2008, 2010) have been dueling it out for the past four years, they have laid down impressive scores in round one.

Kelly Slater
Fanning scored a 15.60 from a possible 20 this morning, it looked set to be the day’s best score but Slater topped it at 16 points to win his round one heat.

Joel Parkinson
Later in the morning, Joel Parkinson had claimed the highest heat score of the day, 17.74 points to move automatically through to the third round along with Slater and Fanning.
As for the women’s division, Stephanie Gilmore from Australia had scored the highest with 16.30, with Sally Fitzgibbons also from Australia closely behind with 16.10, and Silvana Lima from Brazil with a 14.94. Back in 2009, Lima had upset Gilmore’s run. All the heat winners have the luxury of moving on to the next round, while the 2nd and 3rd place will face sudden death in round 2. Be sure to keep a close eye on the event, as this is the 50th anniversary so it will be very exciting.
