Watches for special occasions

What timepieces go with delicate dresses?

This week we’ve been doing some serious thinking, whilst browsing the pages of some significant high street retailers. Stopping on the occasion wear pages of online shopping website Next, we wondered, can cute prom dresses and party wear work with a watch?

Why do we ask this, you wonder? Well it’s been a week of fashion ups and downs, things turning on their heads unexpectedly. This photo of Diane Kruger dressing her pretty kick-skirt summer dress with pink Converse at the French Open tennis shows that you really can mix casual and elegant to great effect.

So what works on your wrist at a party? For practicality’s sake, having a timepiece at a big occasion is often really handy; we might not want to carry a clutch with our watch within it; nor might we want to be checking our phone every five minutes.

Especially if you have a hand in organizing said occasion, finding a timepiece which looks great with your look is essential. Well, in the spirit of mixing things up and going for a few fashion surprises, we’re taking a look at some watches and dress styles that shouldn’t work – but really, really do.

Chunky men-style watches with delicate, simple dresses

This chunky men’s-esque dial watch is gorgeous in a burnished gold; what’s more, it’s been proven in recent years that this kind of bulky, statement piece can work really well with delicate dresses and fabrics, as a counterpoint to the femininity.

This tropical print shift dress (pictured) will look great with a pair of high chunky sandals; or the sequin tunic in blue, part of Next’s Resort Nightscollection. We recommend wearing hair long and simple, and keeping everything else loose and confident – this is not a prim and proper look.

The watch-as-bangle

The Rose Gold Chain watch is a great example of a watch that doubles as a bracelet or bangle; the gold chain detailing and small, discreet face means that you can take this as a starting point to accessorise your whole outfit. We like it with a mid-length formal dress – it looks great with tailored looks and pencil skirt shapes.
